Why do my pipes rattle when I flush the toilet?

Rattling pipes after flushing are almost always caused by a phenomenon called water hammer — the sudden pressure surge that occurs when fast-moving water is abruptly stopped or redirected.

When you flush, the fill valve opens to refill the tank, then snaps shut once it reaches the set water level. That sudden stop sends a shockwave through your pipes, and if those pipes aren't properly secured or lack the right pressure control devices, you'll hear that rattling or banging noise.
