What causes a garbage disposal to smell?

Garbage disposal odors typically come from food particles stuck in the unit, grease buildup on the blades and walls, or bacteria growing in the moist environment. The grinding chamber and splash guard are common culprits where decomposing food creates unpleasant smells.

Food residue is the primary cause - even small particles of meat, vegetables, or grease can stick to the disposal's components and start rotting. The rubber splash guard (baffle) at the top often traps food particles on its underside, creating a breeding ground for odor-causing bacteria. Additionally, grease and oil can coat the grinding chamber walls, trapping more debris over time.

Poor drainage can worsen the problem. If your disposal isn't draining properly due to a partial clog in the drain line, water and food particles sit longer in the unit, increasing bacterial growth and odors. Sometimes the issue extends beyond the disposal itself - problems with the P-trap or main drain line can cause sewer gases to back up through the disposal.

In Ottawa's older homes, disposal units may not have been installed with proper venting, which can contribute to drainage issues and odor problems. The city's hard water can also cause mineral buildup that affects drainage efficiency.

Prevention and cleaning are key to eliminating odors. Run cold water before, during, and after using the disposal to help flush debris. Clean the unit weekly by grinding ice cubes and citrus peels, or use a disposal cleaning product. Always avoid putting grease, coffee grounds, or fibrous materials down the disposal, as these contribute to buildup and clogs.
