Question 1

Does my insurer require water off in a vacant Ottawa house?

Accepted Answer

Your insurer almost certainly requires water shutoff in a vacant home — but the exact requirements depend on your specific policy.

Most Canadian home insurance policies include vacancy clauses that kick in after a property has been unoccupied for 30 to 60 consecutive days. Once that threshold is crossed, insurers typically require one or both of the following: shutting off the main water supply and draining the pipes, or having someone inspect the property every few days (often every 48-72 hour

Question 2

What should I do if a radiator pipe bursts?

Accepted Answer

A burst radiator pipe is a plumbing emergency that requires immediate action to prevent serious water damage to your home. Here's exactly what to do.

Immediate Steps (Do These Right Now)

Your first priority is stopping the water flow. Shut off the main water supply valve to your home immediately — in Ottawa homes, this is typically located near the water meter in your basement or utility room. If the burst is on a heating system (hydronic/hot water radiator), you'll also want to shut off your

"Promptly" matters — loss of water or sewage function is considered an urg
